July 10, Thursday – To the Other Corner
I really enjoyed my stay in Vermont and New Hampshire. I would come back for more exploring in the future. I turned around however and headed back to the coast and water. Maine was there to greet me. Just as I have to explain to people, “I’m from the OTHER Washington.” a new double shows up and is it causing me to stop and fix. Portland. Now Portland means Caitlin’s home and a city I take Amtrak to. It’s on the water with hills and mountains surrounding it. Its twin is on the east coast, Portland, Maine. The radio station I listen to gives traffic reports and weather forecasts for Portland and I have to mentally say “the other one” because I’m from the other corner.
Finding a place to stay is always a crap shot. I pick a state park where I want to stay and go for it. The one I just left in Peterborough, New Hampshire was sweet. Hardwood forest and not a soul around. I was getting lonely there. A four hour drive brought me to my new place and it takes time to get settled to a new environment. Bradbury Mountain State Park in Maine is one of the smallest I’ve stayed in with 33 sites and pit toilets. Again I’m in a hardwood forest with closer neighbors this time. There is a stone wall that runs along the perimeter that must have been built in the 1800’s for many of the huge stones have fallen off the wall. (I could spend hours photographing the stonewalls that I’ve seen in this region. I have a real love affair with them.) Bradbury Mountain is going to be my base camp for a while.
