August 4, Monday – The Barnetts

Last summer while Bob and I were sailing around Vancouver Island there was a wedding in La Conner. Friends of the groom from Maine stayed in my empty house for the occasion and in return extended to me an invitation to visit them “if ever I were in Maine.” It was collection time. Tom, Barbara and Chloe live in the farthest corner of the United State in a settlement called Dennysville, Maine. Their house on Shipyard Road is perched on a hill overlooking an inlet where fishing schooners were built. We had planned on going for a sail but the foul weather that we had on Sunday was still in the area so instead we all went on a walk along Reversing Falls. The narrow passage between two landmasses is the setting for some impressive water works. There is a rock ledge that keeps the tidal waters from just rising and falling. Huge rips, back eddies and tumbling currents provided a sense of awe. Seals were working the eddies and riding down the swift water. This whole setting is in a wooded area reached by a dirt road. It was nice to spend time with the locals in an area that was not developed for the tourist.
It was such a delight to spend time with Tom and his family. There was a connection; we now both have places of retreat in either Washington or Maine. The corners have been joined.
