April 1, Tuesday, Tucson and Beyond
I was determined to leave Tucson before the morning rush hour so at 5:30 I was dressed and ready to go. Hitching the Jetta to the RV was a snap since Bob and I did again and again on our way down to Tucson. After quick “goodbye’s” to Sue and Murray and a plastic zip lock bag full of strawberries, the wagon train pulled out onto Prince and headed for Interstate 10. It had been short of three weeks by one day of having Snee-Oosh in one place. Now the ten cylinder Ford Titan engine was back to the work of sucking down the gas. Price in Tucson at Costco: $3.04/gallon.
I stopped at Texas Canyon on I-10 for breakfast in the rest stop. The joys of being “self contained”. At Deming in New Mexico I peeled off of I-10 and for the first time of this whole trip was on a two lane highway heading for the settlement of Columbus just three miles north of the Mexican border. As I got closer to that imaginary line the ratio of Border Patrol vehicles jumped drastically. At 1:30 I snaked into the packed dirt field of a state park called Poncho Villa. It was sort of an open area with shade shelters and hookups but you could drive most anywhere. I selected an out of the way spot and settled in. If 98 degree temperature can let one do that. I bought an indoor/outdoor thermometer to torment myself and it was doing its job up to standards. By 8pm the temp had dropped to a more tolerable 80 degrees. Time for a second beer and lie naked on the bed……….and forget about starting the air conditioning. Love RVing
