April 5, Saturday, Go or Stay
I couldn’t decide whether to stay another day (Oh, my god, with no plans!) or head south toward Big Bend National Park on the Rio Grande. I tried calling Balmorhea State Park to get a reservation. No one answered; weekend. I stayed another day and night at Guadalupe Mountains. I learned about the Butterfield Stage route from St. Louis to San Francisco. It took 25 days of day and night travel to complete the run. Where I stood was where they traversed the mountains. Where I stood were the Piney Station ruins, the highest place in their 2,800 mile trip.
The day was lazy and non productive. I did my evening ritual of driving down to the visitor center parking lot so I could beam out of the canyon to cyberspace to contact the gmailers.
That night the wind rocked me to sleep with 30 – 40 mph gust roaring down the canyon. Snee-Oosh loves to rock in the wind.
